Following the devastating bushfires on the NSW South Coast, the Australian Government has made available a range of financial assistance to help with clean up and recovery.
The Disaster Recovery Allowance is available for people that have experienced a loss of income as a direct result of the bushfire. You can get the allowance for a maximum of 13 weeks and it’s payable from the date you lose income. The maximum payment rate is the equivalent of Newstart or Youth Allowance, based on your circumstances. Your rate of payment will be affected by your income prior to and following the disaster.
To be eligible, you must be an Australian resident or hold an eligible visa. An income threshold also applies and is the most you can earn in the fortnight after your loss of income. You need to show you’ll earn less than the relevant threshold amount in that period.
The fastest way to claim is by calling 180 22 66. Further information on eligibility is available on Centrelink's website.
