Today, the Australian Government has released the long-awaited dairy code of conduct, providing some relief for dairy farmers that have been calling for the code for months.
However, Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips MP says the code alone will not solve the structural problems facing the dairy industry, which is facing a price-squeeze and suffering through a drought that the government keeps ignoring.
“I am pleased that the government has finally released the code, however what the industry really needs is a minimum farm gate milk price and help from the government with the drought,” Fiona Phillips said.
“The government has missed so many opportunities to provide real help for South Coast dairy farmers,”
Only last month, the Morrison Government abandoned dairy farmers by voting against legislation that would have investigated a fair milk price. They left the South Coast out of all their much-hyped drought packages and they have ignored repeated invitations from the Member for Gilmore to meet with local dairy farmers.
“They are simply not serious about helping local dairy farmers,” Mrs Phillips said.
“I grew up on a family-run dairy farm. I understand the challenges facing our local farmers and I will continue holding the government to account over its failures on the dairy industry,” Fiona Phillips said.
