Transport for NSW will hold a series of drop-in information sessions where community members can meet the project team and learn more about the latest design changes for a six kilometre stretch of the Princes Highway south of Nowra.

Refinements have been made to the design of the Princes Highway upgrade from Jervis Bay Road to Hawken Road which aims to deliver safer and more reliable journeys on the NSW South Coast.

The $500 million upgrade, funded by the Australian and NSW governments, includes upgrading six kilometres of the existing highway to two lanes in each direction, separated by a median barrier, as well as an intersection upgrade at Hawken Road, Tomerong.

Following community feedback and further investigations, changes have been made to the design of the upgrade that will further minimise environmental and community impacts while maintaining the safety benefits of the project.

The refined design includes an underpass at the Princes Highway and Hawken Road intersection that will loop under the highway to connect Hawken Road and Blackbutt Range Road.

Additionally, refinements have been made to some private and local road accesses to improve safety and efficiency.

Transport continues to work with MRB Technical Services to finalise the concept design and Review of Environmental Factors for the upgrade which aims to deliver improved safety, traffic efficiency, freight access and network resilience for transport users.

Transport is holding drop-in information sessions on the following dates.

  • Thursday 24 July 12-4pm, Nowra Centre Plaza 32-60 East Street, Nowra
  • Thursday 31 July 12-4pm, HomeCo Vincentia, 8 Moona Creek Road, Vincentia
  • Saturday 16 August 8am – 1.30pm, Tomerong markets, School of Arts Hall, Hawken Road, Tomerong.

Federal Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips said:

“I’m really pleased to have secured $400 million from the Albanese Labor Government for this important highway upgrade and it’s great that residents have an opportunity to be informed and involved.

“Work to refine the concept design and Review of Environmental Factors is an important part of the project’s planning and as it continues will provide more details on how the surrounding area will be impacted, including flora and fauna, noise and vibration, and Aboriginal heritage.

“I know there has been a lot of community interest in this project and people will have another opportunity to provide feedback on the highway upgrade when the concept design and environmental assessment are released.”

State Member for South Coast, Liza Butler said:

“This section of the Princes Highway has long needed serious investment. These upgrades will cut congestion, support freight and tourism, and most importantly, save lives.”

“I am really pleased that local voices have helped shape this project. These design changes reflect the community’s priorities—protecting the environment, reducing local impacts, and still delivering a safer, more reliable highway for everyone.”

“We want locals to stay informed and involved as this project moves forward. These drop-in sessions are a great opportunity to speak with the team and see exactly how the upgrade is taking shape.”
