Members of the Kiama Central Netball Club are the big winners after scoring a $3,500 Volunteer Grant from the Federal Government.

Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips called in to congratulate the players and volunteers during a recent round of games and said “the place was buzzing”.

“I was delighted to provide some support to help with equipment and storage,” Mrs Phillips said.

“These small grants can make a big difference to community sporting organisations that are providing a fantastic training ground and fun social outlet for young players.

“I really enjoy a hard-fought game of netball, so it was great to watch some of the games between Kiama Central and some of the visiting clubs within the Kiama Netball Association, some of which were very enthralling.”

Kiama Central Netball Club president Kelly Schofield welcomed the funding, and said it would provide an opportunity to purchase resources and equipment for volunteer coaches and committee members to assist in running the club and teams.

“The grant will go towards computer equipment, electronic payment devices and storage to assist the committee with its organisation of the running of the club and its events,” she said.

“It will also assist our coaches, managers and umpires with new resources, equipment and first aid supplies. “

The Kiama Central Netball Club has around 180 members, which consists of 16 teams, 20 coaches, 16 managers, 30 umpires and 15 committee members. Players range in age from six to 60 years spread across all playing groups.

The club is busily planning a bingo night to be held on 10 August at the Kiama Bowling and Recreation Club.

Mrs Phillips said 25 community organisations across the Gilmore electorate would share in more than $66,000 including the Gerringong District All Sports ($3,500), the Lions Club of Gerringong ($2,000) and Gerringong Sunrise Rotary ($1,100).

“It’s fantastic that we are able to provide a boost for these organisations, whether sporting, arts, social or cultural to help cover the costs of training, storage sheds or even a new lawn mower,” she said.

“All of these organisations have such an important role to play in fostering community connections, promoting change, and enriching our society through social and cultural experiences.

“This funding boost is welcomed as it will provide greater support for local volunteers and ensure they can continue to support their community.

“At the end of the day, we want volunteers to know that we are backing them, and I will continue to support their work in assisting our South Coast communities.”
