The iconic memorial Iroquois 894 helicopter will be returning to Nowra after some much-needed maintenance, Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips MP has today confirmed.

While the local ‘chopper on a stick’, as it’s affectionately known, was taken down recently for maintenance, Mrs Phillips said there is no plan that this is a permanent move.

“The Iroquois 894, our chopper on a stick, as many locals know it, is a much-loved feature of our region – I certainly wouldn’t allow its permanent removal.

“Local people can rest assured that our helicopter will be back once it’s had it’s tune up,” Fiona said.

In order to return Iroquois 894 to an appropriate representational state and ensure its ongoing ability to be displayed in its current manner, it has been removed from its mount for inspection and renovation at the Fleet Air Arm Museum at HMAS Albatross.

“We need to make sure that this iconic chopper can be loved by generations to come – so the Fleet Air Arm from time to time takes it down for some maintenance.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved for keeping this chopper up to scratch and in a state fitting for it’s tribute to our local and national veterans, HMAS Albatross and the Fleet Air Arm,” Fiona concluded.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Australia's Vietnam War involvement. The bravery and sacrifice of our veterans continue to be remembered with the utmost respect.
