A full-sized replica of the impressive MH-60R Seahawk Romeo helicopter will soon take pride of place at Nowra’s northern gateway.
More than 5,000 people cast their vote in the “Chopper on a Stick” poll with the Seahawk chopper chosen by the community as the favourite.
After more than 25 years at the gateway to Nowra, the original Iroquois 894 ‘Huey’ was removed due to serious safety concerns.
Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said the new, life‑sized Seahawk replica would continue honouring the region’s deep ties to the Royal Australian Navy and its proud aviation heritage.
“The Seahawk represents the Royal Australian Navy’s current chopper fleet based here at HMAS Albatross – the Navy's largest operational establishment and home of the Fleet Air Arm,” she said.
“People had the chance to choose between a Huey or a Seahawk and I must say, there were some very strong opinions for both during the campaign.
“It was exciting to see so many passionate people getting involved and I’m really pleased that we will have a Seahawk up on that stick soon.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles said the project was about more than reinstating a familiar landmark – it reflected the Shoalhaven region’s enduring connection to Navy aviation and the generations of Defence personnel that have served at HMAS Albatross.
“The community’s overwhelming participation in the poll shows just how deeply the Australian Defence Force is woven into the identity of Nowra and the wider Shoalhaven,” he said.
“Restoring a helicopter to the gateway ensures this proud aviation story continues to be shared with future generations, honouring both local history and those who served.”
Mrs Phillips said having a chopper back on the stick recognised the important role local former and current serving Defence personnel have played – and would continue to play – in defending the nation.
“Since its removal, I’ve been working hard every step of the way to ensure our prominent Navy icon returns to Nowra gateway, because that’s what our community wants and deserves,” she said.
“I hope it will also encourage local young people to consider a career in defence or the defence industry.”
