Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips MP has today thanked the NSW Labor Government and local Labor state MPs for long-overdue upgrades to local schools, which will be included in next week’s state budget.
Mrs Phillips said the former Liberal-National Government and local Liberal MPs ignored the needs of local schools for far too long. She said this announcement is proof of what can be achieved with strong local Labor representation at state and federal levels.
The huge local funding boost includes a new primary school for Nowra, major upgrades at Bomaderry High School and Moruya High School, and upgrades at Ulladulla High School, Ulladulla Public School, Milton Public School and Vincentia High School.
This comes on top of Federal Government investment in 10 local schools across the Gilmore electorate which Mrs Phillips announced in May this year.
“I am simply delighted to see serious action being taken by the Minns Government to address the woeful neglect of these local schools, which we have seen for far too long,” Fiona Phillips said.
“In particular, I have been raising serious concerns with the former state and federal Liberal Governments about the desperate need for major upgrades to Bomaderry High School, which has been plagued by flooding and poor conditions for far too long.”
“For years I have been saying our kids deserve better than a patch job. Those concerns fell on deaf ears under the former government – well, thanks to a strong Labor Government, I am so pleased that is no longer the case,” she said.
Mrs Phillips congratulated all the local principals, P&Cs and school communities who have worked hard for so long to secure these important upgrades. This investment will go a long way to improving educational outcomes for all local children.
Also announced today by the Minns Government is a further $390 million for regional roads including across the Kiama, Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla LGAs, funding to start the East Nowra Sub Arterial Road, and critical upgrades to Milton Ulladulla Hospital including the long-awaited CT scanner and the return of birthing services.
Fiona Phillips said she was looking forward to seeing what else the state government had in store for our region on Tuesday night.
“I am delighted to work with Member for Bega, Dr Michael Holland MP and new Member for South Coast, Liza Butler MP to achieve real results for our community,”
“I’d also like to thank Labor’s former candidate for Kiama, Katelin McInerney, for her support in drawing attention to the real concerns of our community, particularly when it comes to local roads,” Mrs Phillips said.
“What this shows is we finally have governments at both state and federal levels that are serious and ready to invest in our communities now and into the future – how exciting is that,” Fiona Phillips exclaimed.
