Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips MP, has congratulated 23 local students who have received support to attend state and national sporting championships under the Local Sporting Champions Program 2022-23 Round 2.

The Gilmore MP recently joined with previous recipients Mireille and Alexandria to hear about their journey to the Australian Youth Beach Volleyball Championships.

Alexandria came away as number two in Australia for under 18 girls, while Mireille placed 7th in the under 16 girls competition.

“How great is that – and supported to get there with this grant. Well done Alex and Mireille,” Fiona Phillips said.

“Every time someone from the South Coast competes in these championships, they do our community incredibly proud, no matter the outcome.”

Fiona Phillips said she has supported hundreds of local young people with these grants and encourages interested families to apply.

Families in regional areas like ours have to juggle extensive travel to training, trials and competitions, which can be difficult particularly for kids performing at high levels. This grant can mean the difference between being able to compete or having to sit the competition out

“I am proud that so many of our local young people are representing our community at these prestigious sporting events around the country,” Fiona Phillips said.

“I’m delighted to support their journeys with this fabulous program.”

“It is incredible to be selected to these competitions and I would like to sincerely congratulate all our local sporting champions,” she said.

The Local Sporting Champions program provides financial assistance for coaches, officials and competitors aged 12-18 participating in state, national or international championships.

Grants of between $500-$700 are available to support the cost of attending.

Round 3 of the Local Sporting Champions program is open now and further information, including how to apply, is available at www.sportaus.gov.au/grants_and_funding/local_sporting_champions
