Essential planning work for a potential Nowra bypass is progressing well with traffic modelling and preliminary environmental investigations due to get underway shortly.

Progression through the initial project planning phase follows publication of a new consultation summary report which outlines further issues and ideas community members raised during a comprehensive feedback period.

Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said more than 1000 pieces of feedback was received during online and face-to-face community consultation carried out by Transport for NSW between August and October last year.

“The Nowra bypass is a complex project and, together with other improvements to our transport network, it will deliver huge benefits for our region including reduced congestion, faster travel times and improved safety on the Princes Highway corridor," Mrs Phillips said.

“I’m pleased to see important planning work is progressing and community members having their say about how this once-in-a-generation project will be shaped as planning moves forward.

“The Albanese and Minns Labor Governments are proudly partnering to invest in the Nowra bypass project which is part of a program of jointly funded investments in the NSW Princes Highway corridor."

The Australian and NSW Governments are investing $105 million in planning for a bypass of Nowra and other transport improvement initiatives to support the growth of the Shoalhaven and increasing movements through the region along the Princes Highway corridor.

Once the initial project planning phase concludes in 2026, the Nowra bypass project is expected to move into its development phase.

State Member for South Coast Liza Butler said investments in major infrastructure projects like the Nowra bypass and Jervis Bay Road intersection upgrade would set the region up for the future.

“It’s wonderful to see community members speaking up and helping to shape future plans for the Nowra bypass as planning for this incredibly important project progresses," she said.

“With this important community feedback in mind, Transport for NSW can ensure ongoing planning provides solutions that help to reduce congestion, improve safety and deliver better access to active transport connectivity, public spaces and public transport.”

Feedback received from the community has been published in the consultation summary report: https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/system/files/media/documents/2024/nowra-bypass-improvements-summary-report-may-2024.pdf
