New state-of-the-art holiday disability accommodation at Sanctuary Point will provide respite opportunities for families visiting the South Coast over summer.
Purpose-built by Interchange Shoalhaven the two homes in an Ethel Street duplex are fully accessible and have been designed to support people with diverse disabilities by fostering independence, inclusion and comfort.
The duplex was officially opened by Federal Member for Gilmore today (Wednesday December 11, 2024) and will be available for holiday stays from January.
“This is such as fantastic and much-needed service in our region,” Mrs Phillips said.
“It provides an opportunity for families who may have a child or parent with a disability to come and enjoy the fabulous South Coast.
“Finding suitable accommodation for people with a disability can be difficult, so I congratulate Interchange Shoalhaven on this initiative which I know will be highly sought after by visitors to our region, as well as those taking a short break from within the electorate.
“The purpose-built homes are great and the location, close to Jervis Bay and the new accessible Huskisson Mangrove Boardwalk, is amazing.
“People and families shouldn’t miss out on holidaying in our beautiful region just because they have a disability.”
In the next few weeks, the homes will be fitted out with furniture, including bed lifts, to ensure visiting families can be comfortable during their stay.
Interchange board chair Michelle Miran said the opening of the two homes in the rapidly-growing Bay and Basin area was a “significant milestone” for the organization which has provided housing, support services and specialised disability programs out of Nowra for almost 30 years.
“It’s time to take our services to people who want to be closer to their families and their community,” she said.
“This duplex embodies Interchange Shoalhaven’s commitment to providing inclusive, high-quality accommodation and services tailored to meet the needs of NDIS participants and their families.
“We are evolving to meet the changing needs of people with disabilities.”
The accommodation can be booked through online holiday platforms including Accessible Accommodation and Stayz.
Mrs Phillips said the Albanese Labor Government was deeply committed to creating a more inclusive society where all Australians with disability had the chance to fully participate in all aspects of community life and to thrive.
