Bomaderry High School is one of four schools in the Gilmore electorate to receive an infrastructure boost from the Federal Government’s Schools Upgrade Fund.

Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said the $300,000 targeted grant helped build a new covered outdoor learning area (COLA) that was recently completed at Bomaderry High.

“The covered area is used by year seven students at break times, and by all other students during sport and physical education classes,” Mrs Phillips said.

“The structure covers two great new courts that can be used for basketball, netball or other activities.

“With rotating baskets and a non-slip rubber playing surface, the courts can cater for a number of sports.

“It was great to hear the new facility has already played host to a visit by NRLW Dragons players who inspired young sports women.”

In a boost for the environment, the COLA also catches rainwater that can be used in the adjacent school farm and garden, while the inclusion of a power source will allow for the installation of COLA lighting in the future.

Other schools in the electorate to receive targeted funding include Havenlee School at North Nowra which received $148,000 for a COLA, sensory garden and playground upgrades; Moruya High which received $300,000 for a COLA; and Ulladulla High which received $45,000 for a shade structure.

Mrs Phillips said she was proud to deliver the funding for local schools.

“It’s so important to have covered spaces for children to learn in and play on out of the harsh sun and rain,” she said.

“This is another important step in building a better and fairer education system that will help students achieve their best – no matter where they live, or what their background may be.”
