Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips is encouraging people to shop local and support small businesses in Gilmore this Christmas.
“I know South Coast locals are doing it tough right now, and the owners of small businesses are no exception, that’s why I encourage people to spend their money in local shops this Christmas,” Mrs Phillips said.
“Most of our local businesses are run by local families, so it’s important to support them whenever we can.
“I just love shopping for gifts in local shops because, not only are you helping keep small businesses operating and boosting the local economy, you can usually find something unique and often hand-made with love that will be treasured by your family and friends.”
Mrs Phillips recently popped into SLOW in Ulladulla where she spoke to one of the business owners Kim Goodworth about the ethical fashion boutique.
“It was so great to speak to Kim and learn more about where she sources her sustainable fabrics and the importance of promoting the slow fashion industry,” she said.
“It was amazing to watch Kim making her stunning garments on a reconditioned vintage commercial sewing machine. It took me back to my childhood when my mum used to make all our clothes on the farm.
“I was really pleased to purchase some unique hand-made gifts for my family, and a beautiful new top as a treat for myself,” Mrs Phillips said.
Located in Wason Street Ulladulla, SLOW has a focus on sustainable, repurposed and recycled fashion where you’ll find Kim’s label Samook Designs made in Mollymook, and one-off items made by her business partner and local artist Julia Collinson.
“It’s great when people purchase locally made goods at SLOW, because they’re giving a special Christmas gift that they know is kind to the environment, with a transparent and ethical supply chain, and that will last,” Kim said.
“Rather than shopping online this Christmas, it’s great to see people shopping local and keeping their money circulating within the local community.
“When someone buys a skirt from me, I then spend my money in another local shop or café and keep the money in town. It’s the gift that keeps giving and helps many family-owned small businesses.”
Mrs Phillips said shopping local supported local jobs, especially for young people employed during the holiday season.
“I want to give a shout-out to our local business owners and staff who are working hard over the holiday season and thank them for their service,” she said.
“It’s hot and hectic, so I remind shoppers to be patient and most of all, kind, this summer.”
