Recognising the continuing impacts of COVID-19 and the 2019/20 bushfires on remote, rural and regional communities, the Australian Government has partnered with the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) to fund four local projects in the Gilmore electorate under the first round of the Strengthening Rural Communities – Rebuilding Regional Communities (RRC) program.

For the first time, the grant recipients have been divided into three streams: the Small & Vital stream, 2019/20 Black Summer bushfire recovery and a new Rebuilding Regional Communities stream, which focuses on recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in remote, rural and regional Australia.

Local projects include $20,000 for Big Hart Inc to deliver a creative arts project in Nowra, $4,328 for Marine Rescue Jervis Bay to improve its emergency response, $2,550 for the Scouts Association to host a weekly morning tea in Ulladulla and $7,664 for Rally to Recovery to help manage donations after the bushfires in Tomakin.

The Australian Government has committed $5 million from 2022 to 2024 to the RRC stream, which will be distributed by FRRR, for community-led initiatives to support the recovery of remote and regional communities.

Quotes attributable to Fiona Phillips MP, Member for Gilmore:

“I am delighted to see organisations in Nowra, Huskisson, Ulladulla and Tomakin receive support for local recovery efforts after years of bushfires, floods and the pandemic.

“Local people still have a long way to go in our recovery and we know from experience what a difference these community-led programs make.

“Strengthening our resilience and improving health and wellbeing needs to be the focus – and I am really pleased to see this funding flow through to local organisations thanks to the Australian Government

”I will keep working with local organisations to ensure our community receives the support we need.”
